As a photographer drawn to moments steeped in heritage and emotion, I couldn’t have asked for a more captivating experience than attending the Gawai Dayak 2025 Parade in Kuching. This was my first time documenting Sarawak’s most vibrant celebration of Dayak culture — and it was nothing short of extraordinary.
The Gawai Dayak Parade was a kaleidoscope of colour, sound, and unity. Cultural contingents from all across Sarawak — and even as far as Sabah, including members of the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Sarawak Branch — came together for the occasion. Every group brought something meaningful: intricate textiles, rhythmic gongs, warm smiles, and powerful symbols of heritage.
As the parade flowed through the heart of Kuching, the streets came alive with music, movement, and the joyful cheers of spectators. The pride on display was unmistakable — and infectious. My camera was constantly at work, documenting everything from wide-angle scenes of cultural processions to heartfelt candid moments — from the twinkle in a young participant’s eye to elders radiating pride.
Organised with precision and care, the entire celebration was overseen by the State-level Gawai Dayak Celebration Main Organising Committee, chaired by Datuk Gerawat Gala. The presence of distinguished guests like Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas underscored the significance of the event. Thanks to thorough briefings with group leaders and the coordination of 50 seasoned marshals, everything ran seamlessly — allowing us, as observers, to fully immerse ourselves in the moment.
For a first-timer like me, this wasn’t just a photography assignment — it was a deep dive into a culture that is vibrant, living, and full of heart. As I reviewed the image
s later that evening, I realised that each frame carried a story — not just of tradition, but of identity, pride, and the enduring spirit of unity that makes Sarawak so exceptional.
